I remember the days after 9/11 as if they were yesterday. That time in our country’s history was a devastating “bitter-sweet”. From one prospective this was the single most horrendous act of terror inflicted upon the citizens of this great nation. Many innocent lives were lost, family members were abruptly separated from loved ones, and the psychological stress was massive. However, I also remember that this was a time in our history where we as a people turned our focus back to God in record numbers. Religious institutions across our land were filled with our people fellowshipping with one another and praying to God for answers and a since of security to replace the feelings of fear and uncertainty. This was indeed the right approach to address the issues facing our nation. The word of God says in 2 Chronicles 7:14:

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

This is also the right answer and approach for our nation right now. As we look around and observe the many devastating situations that we as a nation are dealing with at this present time, we must say that our land needs to be healed. Our citizens are loosing their homes and jobs in record numbers, our financial institutions are failing and the pressure is overwhelming. However, again the above verse of scripture provides hope. What I love about the above message from God’s word is that in addition to bringing the problem to God in prayer, we are instructed to CHANGE our behavior. This says to me that God understands that even if He fixes the problem in a miraculous fashion it will only be a matter of time before we are back in the same position again. We all know the old quote about the definition of insanity – “Doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.” Therefore we as citizens of this great country must be willing to both pray together and CHANGE together in order to see our nation heal.
